Surge Protection: Product Families

A surge protective device, or SPD, limits short voltage spikes on a power circuit by diverting the surge energy to ground, so downstream equipment sees a lower voltage. Devices are installed at a service entrance, at a distribution panel or next to sensitive equipment, and they are commonly applied in stages.

In North America, SPDs are listed to UL 1449 and classed as Type 1, 2 or 3 by where they connect. Ratings buyers compare include system voltage and configuration, surge current per phase, protection modes and the enclosure. The families listed here come from the manufacturers’ catalog pages, with the ratings each one publishes.
