Capacitor Banks: Product Families

A capacitor bank supplies reactive power close to the load, which reduces the reactive current the source and cables must carry and improves power factor. Fixed banks stay connected. Automatic banks switch steps in and out as the load changes. Where drives and other non-linear loads distort the waveform, banks are paired with reactors as detuned or tuned harmonic filters.

Medium-voltage banks are built in metal-enclosed cabinets or open racks, and low-voltage banks in floor-standing or wall-mounted cubicles. Buyers usually specify system voltage, kvar or MVAr, number of steps, frequency and any filter tuning. The families below are grouped by those types, with the ratings the manufacturers publish.
