Protective Relays: Product Families

A protective relay watches current, voltage and other signals on a circuit and trips a breaker when they show a fault or an abnormal condition. Older relays are electromechanical. Current families are digital and combine protection, metering, communications and event records in one device.

Feeder and overcurrent relays protect distribution circuits, motor protection relays add thermal and start-time functions, and multifunction digital relays cover several applications with a configurable set of elements. Buyers of surplus or replacement relays normally ask for the family and model, the current and voltage input ratings and the control power. Lifecycle notes matter here, because a discontinued relay often has a named successor.
